Oak Ridge Boys Singer Announces Retirement Following Severe Medical Condition
NASHVILLE, TN — After more than five decades of sharing his voice and faith with millions around the world, Joe Bonsall of The Oak Ridge Boys has officially announced his retirement from touring and performing, citing ongoing health concerns that have significantly impacted his mobility and strength.
The 75-year-old tenor, known for his high-energy stage presence and unmistakable voice on hits like “Elvira” and “Bobbie Sue,” made the emotional announcement through an open letter shared on the group’s official website and social media channels.
“Many of you know I’ve been battling a neuromuscular disorder for some time,” Bonsall wrote. “While my heart and mind are still eager to sing, my body just can’t keep up with the road anymore. It’s time for me to step away, rest, and spend precious time with my family.”
The Oak Ridge Boys, one of country and gospel music’s most beloved vocal groups, have been a cornerstone of American music for over 50 years. Bonsall joined the group in 1973, helping to propel them to national stardom with his vibrant harmonies, energetic performances, and deep connection to their gospel roots.
Throughout his career, Bonsall remained an outspoken advocate for veterans, faith, and family. His love for storytelling extended beyond music — he is also a published author, having written several books about faith, life on the road, and personal reflection.
The news of his retirement has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and fellow musicians alike.
“Joe is more than a great singer,” said Duane Allen, lead singer of the group. “He’s a brother. We’ve traveled the world together, shared the stage thousands of times, and prayed together through the hardest moments. We support his decision fully, and we love him dearly.”
While Bonsall’s presence on stage will be missed, he has made it clear that he’s not disappearing entirely.
“I’ll still be around,” he wrote. “Just not out on the road. I plan to keep writing, connecting with fans online, and celebrating this music we’ve made together.”
The Oak Ridge Boys have announced that they will continue their Farewell Tour with a longtime family friend and fellow vocalist stepping in to complete the tour dates, while paying tribute to Bonsall along the way.
Fans across the country have shared memories of concerts, meet-and-greets, and personal moments with Bonsall that left a lasting impression.
“I met Joe after a concert in 1994,” wrote one fan. “He prayed with my family. I’ll never forget the kindness in his eyes.”
As Joe Bonsall steps away from the spotlight, his voice and message will continue to echo through decades of music, millions of hearts, and the enduring legacy of The Oak Ridge Boys.
He may no longer be on stage, but his story — and his impact — are far from over.
